When we say green PCB boards, it does not mean that the PCB board is green, is always refers to the soldermask color.
There are different soldermask colors for PCB boards, generally there are green, white, black, yellow, blue and purple. Green soldermask for PCB boards is the widely used, most cost effectively and it has a very long history in the PCB manufacturing industry. So green soldermask PCB is what most customer choose.
There are some reasons that PCB soldermask is green.
1.Just as our teacher say in school, after reading for a long time see some green will relieve visual fatigue. Some years ago, the quality inspection is mainly carried out by manual work. Looking at the PCB boards for a long time is really a tiring work. And green color can relieve the visual fatigue.
2. Green soldermask is the most common color for PCB factories. At Linked Electronics, we also have a large stock of green soldermask. More demand for green soldermask mask means more competitive cost for that.
3. Green soldermask has superior properties compared to other colors. For green soldermask PCB boards, Linked Electronics
can make 0.1mm soldermask bridge. For other colors, we require at least 0.15mm space to keep soldermask bridge on PCB boards.
Some PCB boards are black color, which Linked Electronics thinks there are 2 reasons for this.
1. Black soldermask PCB looks more advance, especially for matte black soldermask PCBs.
2. For black soldermask PCB, it will be difficult to see the layout of the design, and it will be hard to copy the boards. But at the same time, because the traces are all covered by soldermask, it will increase the reparation cost.
As far as Linked Electronics know, except the android embedded main boards are black soldermask PCBs. In the 1990’s, most PCBs are in green color and people no longer have the idea that black PCB boards are advanced products.
And for the above reasons, Linked Electronics advise customer using green soldermask for PCBs if there are no special requirements
